About old english lettering
Old English is blackletter, and the name is a bit of a misnomer: the style is medieval German in origin and has nothing to do with the Old English language. What defines it is the broad nib held at a steep angle, which makes verticals thick, hairlines thin and every letter a series of separate strokes rather than a curve. It is hard to read in long runs, which is exactly why it survives on mastheads, certificates and one word at a time.
